Digital Frame Scanning
Traditional transfer methods vary. Some methods are better than others but none can compare with scanning each frame into a digital system. Here are some of the reasons why:

  • Film and video frame rates differ, video of projected film will contain partial frames and parts of shutters, resulting in visible flicker. Scanning is frame accurate and flicker free.

  • Sharp focus is hard to achieve with traditional methods. Projection and traditional transfer machines work off the soft base side of the film. When scanning we work off the sharper emulsion side, the image is so sharp you can see the film grain.

  • Projectors emit circular light but film images are rectangular, the eye does a good job of levelling the light but video cameras do not, the result is shadowed corners and edges. When scanning, the image is evenly backlit, which also enhances contrast and colour.

  • Frame edges are not clean cut, projectors are designed to mask these for tidy viewing, with traditional transfers this cropping can occur twice more, once in the camera and again on the playback television resulting in much of that originally filmed being cut out. Scanning allows for more than the complete frame to be captured, right to the edge of the film. Typically we will crop the edges slightly for tidy viewing, however if you wished we can scan the whole film surface including the sprocket holes!

  • Projectors advance film with metal teeth pulling at the film's sprocket holes. Obviously film is designed to do this but old film can be brittle and sprocket holes can tear causing jams, at a rate of 18 to 24 frames per second a projector can quickly chew through very important memories. Bring It On scanners are sprocketless, film is passed through the system by a series of gentle rollers, at a very sedate speed.
